The paintings and photographs on this page are images I created while traveling and working at home in my Swallow Kingdom studio.
I started with this particular image and added my two swallows in acrylic painting techniques and collage integration.
I have always admired the the brush work of Francis Bacon; painter, who lived 1909-1982. Artist Lucinda Parker who lives and teaches in Oregon, is also a master of expressive brush work that I admire.
The laurel bush, and in some cases tree, is a plant that grows everywhere in the northwest. I am not fond of trimming and cutting it, as I did for years before I came to The Swallow Kingdom, I do enjoy using it in my images, however. After all it is a symbol of peace which fits right in with the Swallow Kingdom's motto:
PEACE, HARMONY & BEAUTY.
The "Urban Nature" series has begun!
I have been researching images I have created over the years that show the juxtaposition of urban structure, signs, graffitti and the natural world that surrounds it. This is the first complete painting that I finished that is the gateway to my new exploration, journey and saga in painting.
Photos I took that inspired
my first painting.
A detail close up of the same photo.
These photos were taken on a cruising trip to the Canadian San Juans last summer, 2014. We stopped at
Victoria BC, and I noticed a painted out sign with laurel growing over it.
I like the red in the photos better than in my painting and tink I will create another version of this series soon.
